Shawn Levy directed Free Guy, a 2021 American science fiction action comedy film based on a screenplay by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn and a narrative by Lieberman. Ryan Reynolds plays a bank teller who realizes he is a non-player character in an open-world video game and becomes the story's hero, attempting to save his pals from being deleted by the game's creator. The film also stars Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Taika Waititi.
On August 10, 2021, the film premiered at the Piazza Grande section of the 74th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. Free Guy was released theatrically in the United States on August 13, 2021, in RealD 3D, IMAX, and Dolby Cinema formats, following a year-long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Soonami Games has released Free City, an online open-world video game. Soonami's head developer Antwan Hovachelik took the source code from an unpublished game called Life Itself, written by Walter "Keys" McKey and Millie Rusk, and utilized it to create Free City. Millie uses her avatar Molotov Girl to search Free City for evidence of code she and Keys wrote and to prove that they are the rightful owners of the code. Guy, a non-player character (NPC) in the game, works as a bank teller and spends his time with his best friend and coworker, bank security guard Buddy, who is ignorant that his world is a video game. One day, he comes across Molotov Girl, who is singing the music that he claims his dream girl will enjoy, and he starts to stray from his programming. He steals a pair of sunglasses from a player who is attempting to rob his bank, and through them he observes Free City on the player's head-up display (HUD). Guy speaks with Millie, who believes he is another player named "Blue Shirt Guy" rather than an NPC at first. She tells him that he must reach a level of at least 100 before she will speak to him again. Guy chooses to level up through good deeds rather than harmful acts, performing missions within Free City to attain level 102. "Blue Shirt Guy" becomes a worldwide celebrity as a result of his virtuous advancement, which stands out from that of other players.
Millie and Guy cross paths again when she breaks into the Stash, a well-guarded facility where evidence of Millie's source code is kept. Guy assists Millie in escaping the Stash, and Millie is taken aback when Guy asks for a kiss. Guy's self-awareness stems from artificial intelligence (AI) programming encoding Millie's specific preferences, which Keys had put in Life Itself.Before Free City is wiped from Soonami's servers to make room for its sequel, Free City 2, in two days, Keys resolves to assist Millie in retrieving their code. Guy and Buddy break into the Stash again, and the owner recognizes Guy and hands over the proof. Guy's popularity continues to jeopardize the release of Free City 2, Antwan instructs Keys and Mouser to restart the game from the beginning, but Keys refuses, so Mouser does it.
Millie meets Guy without any recollections of his sentience in the game, but she kisses him nevertheless, remembering Keys' admonition that Guy would need a reminder. Guy's sentience is restored, and he recalls the location of the Island, which is a component of Life Itself that will not be shielded from the impending data wipe and is the only proof of Millie and Keys' original programming. Antwan subsequently tries to remove Guy and Molotov Girl from the game by boosting their "wanted level" to the maximum, but Guy and Millie have persuaded the other NPCs in the game that they are more than their programming, and the game's "wanted level" is reduced to zero.They are no longer responsive to directives from outside sources and refuse to interfere. Antwan eventually resorts to directly modifying the game geography in order to kill Guy and Molotov Girl, while Keys makes his own alterations in order to protect and steer them to the Island, broadcasting the attempt to all of the evicted Free City players. Antwan fires Keys and then sends Dude into the game, a muscular, incomplete duplicate of Guy created for Free City 2. Guy puts his sunglasses on Dude after failing to defeat him in direct battle, the HUD diverting the vastly less mature AI endlessly.
In a last-ditch attempt to prevent his theft from being discovered, Antwan enters Soonami's server room and begins destroying the game's servers with a fire axe, prompting Mouser to discover Antwan's crimes and fire him, but Guy makes it to the Island before he can destroy the last one, an event witnessed by gamers all over the world. Millie approaches Antwan before he destroys the final server and strikes a deal with him to drop her lawsuit and give the Free City intellectual property (IP), as well as the game's earnings; the game's inhabitants are rescued.
Free City 2 is a colossal disaster at launch without Millie and Keys' code, and Antwan is ridiculed by the media for his now-exposed crimes, and he is arrested for theft and criminal mischief. With the rediscovered code, Keys, Mouser, and Millie launch a successful new corporation to distribute Free Life, pulling Guy, Buddy, Dude, and the other Free City NPCs into it. Millie learns that Keys' code was a love letter to her thanks to Guy, and the two hug and kiss. Guy and Buddy reconcile, and they begin to live their own lives in Free Life, free of the constraints imposed by their original Free City coding.
Development:
Matt Lieberman spent three weeks in August 2016 composing the first draft of the Free Guy spec script. Prior to Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the screenplay was sold and put into development, and it is one of the first Fox projects to continue production under Disney ownership, as well as under the studio's new moniker of 20th Century Studios. Shawn Levy, the director, read the script in 2016 but turned it down. After rereading the script together, Levy was introduced to Ryan Reynolds by Hugh Jackman, a mutual acquaintance, and the two decided to work on Free Guy."I haven't been this thoroughly engrossed and invested in something since Deadpool," Reynolds, who also produced the film, remarked.
Filming:
In May 2019, main photography for the film began in Boston, mostly in the city's Financial District. Filming took place in Worcester, Framingham (at the former Framingham Savings Bank building), Weymouth (at the former Naval Air Station), and Revere Beach in Massachusetts.
Design and cultural references:
While the game environment was compared to that of Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite, production designer Ethan Tobman noted the world's design was more influenced by SimCity, The Sims, and Red Dead Redemption 2. Several weapons from different video game and film properties are employed throughout the film, including a Mega Buster, a Star Wars lightsaber, one of Fortnite's pickaxes, the gravity cannon from Half-Life 2, the portal rifle from Portal, Captain America's shield, and Hulk's fist. Following the acquisition of the picture by Disney, which owns the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, the producers requested permission to use iconic weaponry like a lightsaber and Captain America's shield, and were granted permission to do so.

Christophe Beck composed the film's score. Levy had planned to utilize The Outfield's "Your Love," but Reynolds recommended Mariah Carey's "Fantasy." Reynolds approached Carey about using the song, and she agreed to let them use it throughout the film. Jodie Comer's cover of "Fantasy" was also featured in the movie. "Combining a creative concept, lovely, self-aware humor, and a charming ensemble, Free Guy is frivolous joy," the website's reviews agree. [51] The film received a weighted average score of 62 out of 100 from 50 critics on Metacritic, signifying "generally good reviews." On a scale of A+ to F, audiences polled by CinemaScore awarded the film an average grade of "A."
Peter Debruge, writing for Variety, described the picture as "awesome." ""Free Guy is a lot of fun, despite the fact that Levy and the screenwriters seem to be altering the rules as they go," he said of the "at times cumbersome mashup of multiple-reality blockbusters like The Matrix and The Lego Movie." "Free Guy succeeds, thanks in large part to the colorful, humorous, charming, sympathetic work by Reynolds and Comer," he wrote, awarding the picture three out of four stars.
