Fidaa (Spanish for "Spellbound") is a 2017 Telugu romantic comedy film written and directed by Sekhar Kammula and produced by Dil Raju under the Sri Venkateswara Creations banner. Varun Tej and Sai Pallavi feature in the film, which marks the latter's Telugu debut. The story revolves around Bhanumathi (Pallavi), a strong-willed country girl, and her brother-in-brother law's Varun (Tej), an NRI from the United States.
Principal photography began in August 2016 and took place in Telangana's Banswada, Texas, and Colorado. Shakthkanth Karthik wrote the film's soundtrack, while Vijay C. Kumar and Marthand K. Venkatesh handled cinematography and editing, respectively.
The film was a commercial triumph when it was released on July 21, 2017, grossing over 90 crore on a budget of 13 crore. The film was nominated for nine Filmfare Awards and won four of them, as well as two SIIMA Awards. Film Companion named Sai Pallavi's performance among the 100 Greatest Performances of the Decade. Film Companion named the film one of the "25 Greatest Telugu Films Of The Decade."
Varun is a non-resident Indian who lives in Texas with his adoptive younger brother Bujji and older brother Raju. He is pursuing a career as a neurosurgeon as a medical student. Varun and his younger brother travel to India for Raju's wedding to Renuka, whose family hails from Banswada, Telangana. He meets Renuka's younger sister, Bhanumathi, there. Bhanu is a stunning and self-assured young lady who refuses to be second best to anyone. Varun and Bhanu grow to like one other over time but never voice it. Bhanu adores her father and does not believe in abandoning him after she marries.Varun is talking to his cousin Shailu about the chances in the United States against India, which he considers unsuitable for settlement. Worse, Bhanu misinterprets his reference to a marriage between Shailu and her boyfriend as a marriage between Varun and Shailu, making her feel betrayed and mislead by Varun. Bhanu, who is heartbroken, decides to forget Varun and suppress her affections for him by ignoring him. Varun returns to the United States after his brother's wedding, but he can't stop thinking about Bhanu. He makes the decision to tell her he loves her. However, Bhanumathi responds in a disrespectful manner, enraging Varun and widening the chasm between them, which is exacerbated by future rude behavior from both of them. Bhanu eventually agrees to marry the man of her father's choosing, but she learns she doesn't like him even before they married.
